Speed and Simplicity – something we might learn from the world of startups.
At Google Ventures, they do product design work with startups all the time. Since they want to move fast and the startups want to move fast, Google has optimized a process that gets predictably good results in five days or less. They call it a product design sprint, and it’s great for getting unstuck or accelerating projects that are already in motion.
An introduction to the Design Sprint method. Some background and explanatory thinking..................
Intro DocsStart with a big, important problem; pitch it to your team; and schedule a user study before you even start..........
Prep ExercisesThe goal of the first day is to encourage everyone to share what they already know and develop a common view..........
Lift OffThis step is best described as “diverge” because everyone is cranking out quick sketches on paper.........................
Going WideToday we’ll look at how to decide which solutions to flesh out, and how you’ll fit them together into something you can rapidly test with users ................
Decision DayNow it’s day 4 and the clock is ticking. You’re going to create a real-looking version of yesterday’s storyboard and show it to users tomorrow..........
Get MakingToday, we test our prototype and learn which ideas worked, which didn’t, and what to do next. This is the fixed hard deadline we've been working to........
Test DayWant to know more? Then take a look at this online course on Design Thinking from Stanford's d. School. Its the basis for much of this methodology
Second helpings?I used an online service called "Webflow" - it enabled me to build a fully responsive site without writing any code. View this site on a mobile or a tablet and you'll see what I mean. Its a great tool, obviously it has its limitations, but if we need to use a rapid prototyping methodology then Webflow could be a tool of choice.
